Jan Cesar taught at Greenwood Elementary School in Waukegan, Illinois for eighteen years. In 2009, on the first day of the school year, Jan discovered a lump that was soon diagnosed as cancer. Throughout her surgery and treatments, Jan's great courage and spirit to live well, laugh often, and love unconditionally inspired adults and children. In 2013, the Waukegan School District honored Jan and a colleague by naming a new learning center building after them. Jan was concerned about the effects of her cancer on family, friends, colleagues, and the children in her care. Jan intended this story to help others, and asked me to finish the process of publication. It is a sister's promise I am privileged to fulfill. Told through the eyes of one of her second grade students, this is the beautiful story of a challenging school year and how Mrs. Cesar and her class coped with cancer.
