Andreas Cellarius (c. 1596-1665) is best known for hisAtlas Coelestis seu Harmonia Macrocosmica, a fascinating celestial atlas and a remarkable achievement of the golden age of Dutch cartography. Although born and educated in Germany, Cellarius, a Latin instructor and cosmographer, livedin Holland for most of his life, during which time Amsterdam was a world center for mapmaking. This map of the heavens is a star chart after JuliusSchiller s Christianized Heaven, Southern Hemisphere, wherein constellations feature Old Testament saints rather than pagan deities. It was first published in 1660 by Johannes Janssonius of Amsterdam as one of twenty-nine hand colored double-folio maps included in Cellarius s atlas. This edition of the Harmonia Macrocosmicais in the collection of the British Library, which encourages research and promotes education while engaging the public throughthe display and interpretation of its extraordinary resources.
