Getting kids to take an interest in physical activity can be a real battle. Veteran teachers know that half of that battle is finding something that young people care about; something that speaks to them, in a language they can understand. In theatres and playgrounds across the western world Hip-Hop has proved itself to be a positive source of fascination and inspiration for many young people, regardless of ethnicity and social background. It offers a means by which young people can express and challenge themselves, calling on skills of athleticism, verbal dexterity and an appreciation of visual culture. Tapping into the power of this cultural movement "Hip-Hop Health" affords teachers the opportunity to relate to their students without resorting to potentially embarrassing displays of youthful affectation. The DVD is approximately 30-minutes long and divided into three 10-minute segments known as 'bouts' of activity. This built-in flexibility allows the DVD to be used by a classroom teacher as a 10-minute activity break or by a physical education teacher as a 30-minute workout, as well as many different combinations.
This approach matches well with school mandates that require minimum levels of activity for students and current research that suggests that exercise should be performed for at least 10 minutes to be effective.
