Children enjoy the self-competition aspect of these activities while at the same time reinforcing their knowledge of essential facts. Additional material is provided on most pages for fast finishers. This material aligns with the competency level of the speed test being done and touches on an area that children find interesting. Curriculum links and answers have also been included for ease of planning and marking. The Lesson Format - A stopwatch is needed so children can be told their times. Question types should be discussed before the children attempt each test. The tests are designed to reinforce and improve rapid calculation skills, not introduce new concepts.Children start together. As they complete the speed test, they indicate this by calling out 'finished', or putting their hand up. The teacher tells the child the time taken and this is recorded by the child in thespace provided. Activities are provided for the child to go on with when finished. Scope is provided for self-evaluation after marking. Marking - Teachers are able to use a variety of methods for marking. One approach children enjoy is the calling out of answers in groups of ten by individual class members.Make a Booklet - By photocopying back-to-back, a week's set of four can be put on two sheets.
Twenty sheets can be used to make a booklet for a term.A strip of masking tape as a spine can stop these becoming ragged in appearance. Make Your Own - A speed test blank is included in this book to allow teachers to provide for the special needs of their pupils.Individual ability levels can be catered for by the teacher by reducing the number of problems to complete. This can be increased as pupils gain more confidence with their tables.
